Founding Statement

RUAHU Institute

Spirit into Form
— Giving form to the unseen spirit, to carry it into the future —

We believe that human culture is not something merely inherited from the past. It is something that is continually renewed and transformed through encounters between people.

Clothing, craft, dance, music, architecture, language, the body, and art.

These were never truly separate from one another. Together, they have formed a living world within the everyday lives and spiritual cultures of people.

In contemporary society, however, they have increasingly become divided into specialized fields, leaving fewer opportunities to experience the essential interconnectedness of culture.

RUAHU Institute was founded to move beyond these divisions and reconnect culture as a living whole.

With cultural exchange between Japan and Cambodia, as well as the wider Asian region, as one of our foundations, we seek to cultivate new spaces for cultural creation through traditional craftsmanship, contemporary art, fashion, dance, music, spatial art, education, and research.

The name RUAHU derives from a word associated with breath, spirit, and the wind of life.

We believe that human creativity is born not only from what can be seen, but from the convergence of invisible elements: thought, prayer, embodied knowledge, technique, history, and memory.

To transform that spirit into form through clothing, into experience through space, and into the future through culture—

this is the mission of RUAHU Institute.

Building upon the long-standing cultural exchange between Japan and Cambodia, we aim to create a circulation of culture across generations and national borders through collaboration with traditional textile makers, practitioners of traditional dance, contemporary artists, designers, educational institutions, cultural organizations, businesses, researchers, artists, craftspeople, and local communities.

We regard culture not simply as something to be preserved, but as a creative practice that continues to evolve toward the future. We therefore seek to create opportunities for its transmission to younger generations and for meaningful international dialogue.

RUAHU Institute is not an organization created to possess culture.

We aspire instead to be a place where culture can be shared, nurtured, and passed on to the future.

To this end, we will work together with artists, researchers, educational institutions, businesses, public institutions, cultural organizations, and communities in Japan and abroad to build a cultural platform for a new era.

We believe:

Culture connects people.
Art crosses borders.
And creativity transforms the future.

RUAHU Institute was founded to create that future together.

Spirit into Form
Giving form to the unseen spirit, to carry it into the future.
